Maintaining zoysia grass involves several key steps to ensure its health and appearance. Here are the general steps to follow:

1. Watering: Zoysia grass has good drought tolerance and requires less water than some other grass types. However, it still needs regular watering to thrive. Water deeply but infrequently, aiming for about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall. Watering deeply encourages the grass roots to grow deeper, making it more resilient.

2. Sheehan Turf Care Mowing: Zoysia grass should be mowed regularly to keep it at an optimal height. The recommended mowing height for most zoysia varieties is around 1.5 to 2.5 inches. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade’s height at a time to prevent stress on the plant. Regular mowing helps promote denser growth and reduces weed competition.

3. Fertilizing: Zoysia grass benefits from regular fertilization to maintain its health and color. Apply a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer in early spring when the grass starts to green up. Follow up with additional applications during the active growing season, typically in late spring and early summer. Always follow the specific recommendations for the fertilizer you choose, as different products may have different application rates.

4. Weed control: Zoysia grass has good natural weed resistance once established, but it’s still important to control weeds. Regular mowing at the appropriate height can help prevent weed growth. Spot-treat any weeds that do appear with an appropriate herbicide, following the instructions on the product label. Avoid using herbicides that are not labeled for use on zoysia grass, as they can cause damage.  Sheehan Turf Care Focuses on maintainence.

5. Thatch control: Thatch is a layer of dead grass and other organic material that accumulates between the grass blades and the soil. Excessive thatch can hinder water penetration and nutrient absorption. To control thatch buildup, dethatch the lawn if necessary. Dethatching can be done using a dethatching rake or a power dethatcher. However, zoysia grass generally has a slower thatch buildup compared to other grass types.

6. Aeration: Aerating the lawn can help alleviate soil compaction and improve water and nutrient absorption. Use a lawn aerator or a core aerator to create small holes in the soil, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the root zone. Aeration is typically done in early spring or fall when the grass is actively growing.

7. Overseeding (optional): If your zoysia grass has thin areas or patches, you can consider overseeding with zoysia grass seed. Overseeding helps fill in bare spots and promote a thicker lawn. It’s best done in late spring or early summer when the existing grass is actively growing. Follow the instructions for the specific zoysia grass seed you choose, as the planting and care requirements can vary.

Remember to always consult local experts or a professional lawn care service for specific recommendations tailored to your region and the particular variety of zoysia grass you have.
